Whether you desire adventure, luxury, or exploration, High Seas Cruising is your compass to unforgettable cruise vacations. I conducted several speed tests throughout the cruise, using SpeedTest.net on my laptop and Android phone. I ran tests at different times of day to account for the time of day and the ship’s position.
Choose free Wi-Fi as a booking perk
For instance, I am at the Classic tier of Celebrity's loyalty program, which (as you see below) gets me a 10% discount on internet packages. At the higher Elite level, Captain's Club members get a 30% discount on internet packages. I consistently found download speeds of Mbps, similar to sister cruise line Royal Caribbean’s Voom internet at sea. Remember that I tested the internet speeds in Alaska, which has slower internet connections than the Caribbean, Bahamas, or Mediterranean. While on Celebrity Equinox, I tested the internet speeds of the Premium WiFi to compare them to those of other cruise lines.

Wi-Fi on cruise ships has improved dramatically in recent years, but there are several things you should know about Wi-Fi on cruise ships before boarding. While the internet on cruise ships can be helpful, it's also important to remember that it will never be quite what we have on dry land. On some cruise ships, the signal has become so much faster you now can stream Netflix from the comfort of your cabin — something that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. Yes, all cruise ships today offer an internet connection, but it might not be the seamless experience you've come to expect on land.
As many cruisers have found the hard way, international phone plans such as AT&T's $10-a-day International Day Pass do not apply to cruise ships at sea. If you let your AT&T phone roam while you're on a vessel, you'll pay $2.05 per megabyte of data — even if your base plan at home offers you unlimited data. You'll also pay $3 per minute to make a call, $0.50 per text and $1.30 to send a photo.
Basic Wi-Fi
Just don't expect to be able to do bandwidth-hogging activities such as gaming. While fast by cruise ship standards, Celebrity's Xcelerate internet service remains far slower than what you're probably used to at home. Alternatively, you can upgrade the internet package once onboard the cruise ship.
In fact, I was surprised by the abundance of empty lounge chairs, especially since it was a little bit before peak lunch times. The hero photo is credited to Chris Yansick, who is currently sailing onboard Wonder of the Seas. From receiving identifiable wristbands to having my basic drink package treated like the premium one, here's everything that surprised me on my visit to Perfect Day at CocoCay with Celebrity Cruises.
Unlike at resorts on land, the internet on cruise ships is often quite expensive -- more than $20 a day on some lines. You could easily spend upwards of $100 a week on cruise ship internet just to connect with one device. You'll pay even more if you want to have multiple devices online at the same time.

Where I live in North Carolina, the local cable company's least-expensive internet package promises download speeds of 200 Mbps. Celebrity Cruises Basic WiFi package provides access to web browsing, email, and messaging apps. It’s an excellent option for staying connected if you don’t need video calling, social media, or streaming. Some cruise lines offer free Wi-Fi to guests sailing in their top suites. With Star and Sky Suite Class perks, suite guests onboard Royal Caribbean's Oasis and Quantum class ships get free premium Voom Wi-Fi.
Celebrity Cruises allow you to wake up in a new place every day. Explore all seven continents and over 300 destinations in 79 countries. From the charm and history of locations like Marseille, France, to the rich culture of Asia, the rugged beauty of Alaska, and the dreamy beaches of the South Pacific. Wi-Fi is not available on Disney's private island, Castaway Cay. Passengers on Crystal Cruises' ocean ships can surf the internet on complimentary standard Wi-Fi throughout the ship on both Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity. The Celebrity Cruises app allows guests to preview menus, find venues onboard, book shore excursions and plan their entire cruise.
They really seemed to want to give passengers every bit of information possible to help them plan a "perfect" day ashore. With the latter option, you can also share the Wi-Fi availability with other passengers in the cabin who do not have Princess Premier. You can also purchase a single 24-hour pass for the Value plan at $25 or the Premium plan at $35. To find the strongest Wi-Fi signal on the ship, download a network analyzer like NetSpot. Keep your phone in airplane mode while on the ship to avoid roaming charges and other fees. The Viking Voyager app allows guests to preview and book shore excursions, learn about upcoming ports and view weather forecasts, among other things.
